Enhancing Risk Management Capacity Through Crop Insurance Education for Oregon Tree Fruit Trainers and Producers
This project addresses the underutilization of crop insurance among Oregon’s tree fruit producers by strengthening insurance knowledge, network, and risk management capacity. Many producers in this high-value specialty crop sector face increasing production, financial, and legal risks, yet remain underinsured due to limited program understanding and accessibility. The project will provide targeted, bilingual education that enhances producer understanding, trust, networks, and confidence in using crop insurance tools to manage these risks.
The project will deliver four train-the-trainer and four train-the-farmer workshops across four Oregon regions: the Willamette Valley, Southern Oregon, Columbia River Basin, and MiltonFreewater. Trainers include Extension specialists, community-based educators, private industry representatives, and non-profit partners. Tree fruit producers from both large and small operations. We will also provide bilingual educational materials, interactive scenario-based games, short YouTube videos, and newsletters. A final webinar will share project results, gather feedback, and identify future outreach needs.
